This year at Super Forum we had so much fun highlighting a few of our clients who went above and beyond with their community building. It was hard narrowing it down to pick just one team per category—we’re lucky to have many community experts as clients!—but we are very proud of the teams we chose as winners. So, without further ado, the winners of the 2017 Higher Logic Floyd awards are: Most Successful Online Community  Dynamics GP User Group Launched in 2013, the Dynamics GP User Group (GPUG) has successfully elevated a software user group into a member acquisition and retention titan. In 2017, they’ve experienced 60 percent non-member ...

Hi, all - a common question we get from admins is how to create an HL-managed Security Group and add users to it. The good news is that all Super Admins have the ability to do this, and this can be useful when creating groups to email, sending to ad hoc lists, and a variety of other functions. Steps below: Create a new HL-Managed Security Group . Go to Admin > Tools > Data Sync > Add Users to HL Security Group and you will see the following: Export the Example CSV and fill in the columns with your users' information. Select the Security Group to which you'd like to add your list. Click the Upload CSV and Submit button to upload your CSV ...

Hi, all - a common question we get from admins is how to create and edit our HTML carousel, usually located on the homepage, as below: Fortunately, my colleague @Raymond Alexander has put together some comprehensive, step-by-step instructions on how to update this, located in our Product Q&A Resource Library . In the course of working on this, you may see that there are some differences in the old version of the HTML editor versus the new. You can toggle back and forth between the two versions via the blue bar at the top of your HTML content item, below: One of the main differences is that you will not be able to see all of the carousel images ...

There is something for every level and type of Higher Logic client. When it comes to making online purchases, customers want it to be quick, easy and straight-forward. The same is true with event registration. Here are some tips for streamlining your registration process and giving your customers a great purchase experience. 1. Identify Attendee Personas Do you have different kinds of attendees coming to your event? For instance, speakers, students, and exhibitors are all different kinds of attendees. Each one may require a different registration process. Exhibitors may need to select their company’s booth placement and students may pay less than full conference attendees. Identify all your possible attendee types and ...

In DC the humidity is finally receding, the leaves are beginning to change … must mean Super Forum is around the corner! We always look forward to Super Forum and work hard to craft a unique event each year. A few things are going to stay the same—the venue, the networking opportunities, a fun party, SWAG!—but we have a few new items up our sleeve. So what is going to make 2017 different from all the rest? Here are the top three things I’m looking forward to: Keynote Speakers Like Never Before We have two awesome keynote speakers lined up this year. First, we have Wharton professor, best-selling author and word-of-mouth marketing ...

2017 has been a year of movement in the community space. At Higher Logic, we acquired two companies ( Socious and Kavi ), Vista Equity Partners acquired Lithium in the spring, Jive was acquired by Aurea earlier this summer and, now, Jive is in the news again. This time, Lithium has acquired Jive-x customers and their codebase, again changing the online community landscape. (Just for a little background: Jive-x is for external communities (customers, partners) and Jive-n is for internal communities (employees). So what does all this change mean for those of us in the community industry? And what can we expect going forward? ...

Hi, all - a common question we get from admins is how to create a vanity URL (a shortened URL with an easy-to-remember path) for certain pages that they may be promoting via print or other marketing collateral. The good news is that for most pages, this is a built in feature - in our jargon, we call the field where you would add the vanity URL's name the pagecode . If you go into the setup of any page on the site, you will see this field, here: That means that in this case, if you simply put http://hug.higherlogic.com/blogs into your URL address bar, you'll go to our blogs page, here . As you can see when you click on that link, the actual URL path ...

We’re only halfway through 2017, but it’s been a big year for us at Higher Logic! Why? As we have done every year since our inception, we continually strive to improve our products, our team, and our impact -- because, at the end of the day, we measure our success by the success and satisfaction of our customers. Over the past six months we’ve really focused on growing and expanding the value we bring to our customers. We jump-started the year with the acquisition of Socious in January followed just one month later with the acquisition of Kavi .    Now we have three offices—Arlington, VA, Mesa, AZ, and Portland, OR—have expanded our teams, have ...

Hi, all - a common question we get from admins is how to best implement a new site design when working with an external designer. (If you haven't already chosen a designer, here is our recommended list of experts .) Our best practice recommendations are below: Create a sandbox site. If you are licensed for microsites, I would recommend going to your Site List and copying your main site. Name it something like "sandbox," and this will be the site where your third-party designers can work and test on, without affecting your main live site. If you are not licensed for microsites, put in a support ticket requesting one here . Give your designers access. ...

In building Higher Logic Academy Online, one of our main goals was to create a learning experience anyone could benefit from, whether youre a Super Administrator or just need to place Ads on a site - to anything in between. I love Higher Logic Academy Live - our monthly, in-person event - but not everyone can come. And, to be honest, not everyone involved in a community needs an intensive workshop like that. That led us to create an online learning hub where clients can customize their learning experiences. Build your Higher Logic learning experience What does this customizable learning experience look like? Our offerings are divided into three ...

Committee communities are a big part of your association. And staff liaisons are a big part of the committee communities. In a way, the liaison is the community manager for that particular group and has incredible potential to spur activity and excite those members. But do they always know how to lead and make the committee community as valuable as possible for members and your association? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Sure, there are some incredible staff liaisons who do an excellent job of spurring their committee communities and really taking advantage of their online community platform. But for each effective staff liaison, theres often an ineffective ...

Hi, all - this is a quick breakdown on how to add community administrators to a member-created community. (Please note: for AMS-managed communities, all changes to membership and admin roles will take place via your membership database and will be transferred to the Higher Logic side via the periodic sync.) To add a community administrator, you should first navigate to your community landing page, click on the Settings button next to the community title, and click on the Members button: Once there, click on the Add Administrators button: Type in the name of the user you'd like to add as an administrator (please note: they must already ...

2016 was a big year for Higher Logic - we had about 30 big product releases and tweaks and over 100 more minor tweaks. Since you’re in our product almost as much as we are, I’m sure you’ve noticed many of the adjustments we made - we hope it made your life easier! At Super Forum, I did a recap of the top 10 things we released - according to me - the items I’m most proud of. Here’s a quick recap from my keynote, either to jog your memory or catch up if you missed it: Faceted Search -  We released Faceted Search early this year – to much rejoicing. Following that we spent a bunch of time refining it, tweaking it and working on performance. ...

At Super Forum 2016, Higher Logics team of six community managers did just that in a two-part break out session, Lets Open a Can of Worms. They dove right into the weeds of many topics that community builders deal with every day (keep an eye out for the audio recordings - coming soon!). Heres a summary of our three favorite topics the community team and audience tackled together: Should you allow advertising in the community? Once your community is established, advertisements and sponsored content can be a great way to offset costs. Pro Tips: Advertising doesnt always have to be commercial or from a third party. You ...

Is your community stuck? Or, worse, is it stuck and you dont even know it? Richard Millingtons Super Forum breakout session was about just that - figuring out if your community is stuck and, if so, how to successfully move on. How do you spend your time? Before even strategizing about how to unstick yourself, according to Richard, its important to look at how you, as a community builder, spend your time. For some people, community management is full time; but for others, its a duty wrapped into another job. Why is it important to break down your duties and see how much time youre spending on each task? Richard says youre probably wasting ...
