In building Higher Logic Academy Online, one of our main goals was to create a learning experience anyone could benefit from, whether youre a Super Administrator or just need to place Ads on a site - to anything in between. I love Higher Logic Academy Live - our monthly, in-person event - but not everyone can come. And, to be honest, not everyone involved in a community needs an intensive workshop like that. That led us to create an online learning hub where clients can customize their learning experiences. Build your Higher Logic learning experience What does this customizable learning experience look like? Our offerings are divided into three ...

Committee communities are a big part of your association. And staff liaisons are a big part of the committee communities. In a way, the liaison is the community manager for that particular group and has incredible potential to spur activity and excite those members. But do they always know how to lead and make the committee community as valuable as possible for members and your association? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Sure, there are some incredible staff liaisons who do an excellent job of spurring their committee communities and really taking advantage of their online community platform. But for each effective staff liaison, theres often an ineffective ...

2016 was a big year for Higher Logic - we had about 30 big product releases and tweaks and over 100 more minor tweaks. Since youre in our product almost as much as we are, Im sure youve noticed many of the adjustments we made - we hope it made your life easier! At Super Forum, I did a recap of the top 10 things we released - according to me - the items Im most proud of. Heres a quick recap from my keynote, either to jog your memory or catch up if you missed it: Faceted Search - We released Faceted Search early this year to much rejoicing. Following that we spent a bunch of time refining it, tweaking it and working on performance. ...

At Super Forum 2016, Higher Logics team of six community managers did just that in a two-part break out session, Lets Open a Can of Worms. They dove right into the weeds of many topics that community builders deal with every day (keep an eye out for the audio recordings - coming soon!). Heres a summary of our three favorite topics the community team and audience tackled together: Should you allow advertising in the community? Once your community is established, advertisements and sponsored content can be a great way to offset costs. Pro Tips: Advertising doesnt always have to be commercial or from a third party. You ...

Is your community stuck? Or, worse, is it stuck and you dont even know it? Richard Millingtons Super Forum breakout session was about just that - figuring out if your community is stuck and, if so, how to successfully move on. How do you spend your time? Before even strategizing about how to unstick yourself, according to Richard, its important to look at how you, as a community builder, spend your time. For some people, community management is full time; but for others, its a duty wrapped into another job. Why is it important to break down your duties and see how much time youre spending on each task? Richard says youre probably wasting ...

Hi, all - a common question we get from new admins is how to access and get started with Email Templates. This is a two-part process that can help your organization email messages to specific communities in an efficient and consistent manner, while empowering community admins to communicate with community members as they grow its use and membership. So let's dig in! Part One: Build Your Template The first place you need to go will be to Admin > Communities > Email Templates : Once you're in that section, you can sort by Community Messages , here: You can edit any of the existing boilerplate templates (and we have a lot!) by clicking on ...

Hi, all - a common question we get from new admins is how to move menu items around in the main navigation of their sites. For this, it's a simple case of cutting and pasting - for example, if I want to switch two items in the main navigation, I would start here: The first thing I would do is go to Edit Navigation via my Super Admin tools: This will bring you to the Site Setup > Navigation section, where you can re--order your navigation items. Once here, I'm going to select the navigation page I want to switch, and click on the scissors icon, below: Then select the navigation item below which you'd like to paste the item and click ...

We have some exciting news to share. Higher Logic was named a Leader in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Online Communities 2016 Vendor Assessment report that was just released. For those who are not familiar with IDC they are an analyst firm that focuses on the high tech market, similar to Gartner and Forrester. Everyone at Higher Logic is very proud of this designation. We strive to build the best product for you, our clients, and being identified by IDC as a leader in the market lets us know we are on the right track. Not only are we identified as Leader, but we are placed in the farthest top-right corner of their MarketScape graphic (see below). ...

What steps are you taking to keep your association's membership from declining? Membership levels are a genuine concern for associations across the country. As your older association members retire, it's vital that you attract younger members. Times are changing - putting out a regular newsletter and a yearly conference isn't enough. If you want to keep attracting members who will engage with what you do, you need to look to your younger members and prospects as well as your established members, and connect with them in ways they respond to. It's time to think about: Listening to Your Members : To keep your members' interest and attract new ones, you ...

Hi, all - a common question we get from new admins is how to add or remove links to the main navigation of their sites. It's easier than it sounds! The first thing to understand about our Edit Navigation section is that we categorize pages and content in two sections, below: In the left-hand, or Navigation section , the folder icons (or pages ) that are showing in the navigation have the beige color. The pages that have the muted look are the pages that are present on the site, but not visible in the main navigation. The best was to change the visibility settings of these pages is to select he page and click the Edit button, here: ...

ASAE Annual is one of the biggest events we participate in every year, and we wouldn’t dream of missing it. It’s a great opportunity to join thousands of attendees to learn and collaborate on how to improve the association landscape. This year’s event is August 13-16 at the Salt Palace Convention Center . ASAE Annual in Salt Lake City Check out the schedule of events – it’s chock-full of great sessions, guest speakers, vendors, parties and more. We’re especially excited for the session, “Web Accessibility in Action,” on Monday, August 15 at 9am (Room 255A). Higher Logic’s Product Manager Mark Eichler and eConverse’s Director ...

Hi, all - this is a question we get pretty regularly, so I just wanted to share some insight. If you're using Google Webmaster Tools and trying to verify your community site, here's the best quick-and-dirty way to do it: Log in to your Google Webmasters Tools account Go to your Search Console and select the site you'd like to verify Choose the HTML Tag option under the Verification Options section and copy the meta tag Google generates for you (I would recommend keeping this tab open, as you'll need it again in a moment): Log into your community site and go to CCAdmin > Tools > Custom CSS/JS/Meta Paste ...

We signed our agreement with Higher Logic in early July and are off and running with our project. Our goal is to use HL to engage a community of teachers who work with students who are visually impaired. We want these teachers to have a place to connect/stay connected, share experiences and resources, etc. We have a lot to learn about the platform and ultimately how to best leverage it here at Perkins but early indications are that we've made a good choice. As a brand new customer, I figured I would try the blog feature and share my experiences. Most of you on this site probably know everything I'm about to learn. Some early highlights from our ...

This year has been an especially exciting year for Higher Logic. Among many accomplishments in 2016, we added new capabilities to the product, including Volunteer Manager, vastly improved Event Manager, added new tools for components, and enhanced Automation Rules. We’ve also dramatically increased the amount of material available through the Higher Logic Academy, and the number of individuals who have availed themselves of that material has reached new heights – more than 160 students so far in 2016. And of course, what makes these community features great is our clients and their community members. Communities generate mountains ...
